Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Everything you need to know before starting counselling

Starting counselling can feel like a big step. Below are clear, honest answers to the questions most people ask before booking their first session.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is a relaxed, confidential conversation where we focus on you.

You can expect to:

  • Talk about what’s brought you to counselling
  • Share as much (or as little) as you feel comfortable with
  • Explore what you’d like to change or improve
  • Ask any questions about how counselling works

There’s no pressure to “get it right.” The goal is simply to help you feel understood and comfortable enough to begin.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person.

  • Some clients benefit from a small number of sessions
  • Others prefer longer-term support
  • Many start with 4–6 sessions and review progress

We’ll regularly check in to make sure the work is helping and adjust as needed.

How quickly will I see results?

Counselling is not an instant fix—but many clients begin to notice shifts within a few sessions.

Progress depends on:

  • What you’re dealing with
  • How long it’s been affecting you
  • How regularly you attend

The aim is meaningful, lasting change—not quick, temporary relief.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes—confidentiality is a core part of the process.

Everything you share is kept private, with rare exceptions where:

  • There is a serious risk of harm to you or others
  • Legal or safeguarding requirements apply

These situations will always be discussed with you where possible.

How do I know I’m getting a professional service?

You’re working with qualified therapists who:

  • Follow the BACP Ethical Framework
  • Receive regular professional supervision
  • Work to recognised standards of care and confidentiality

This ensures you receive safe, ethical, and accountable support.

How much does counselling cost?

We aim to keep counselling accessible and competitively priced.

Typical fees:

  • Individual sessions from £50–£60
  • Couples counselling is charged at £90 per session
  • Reduced-cost sessions available with student therapists

You can choose what fits your budget and needs.

Do you offer affordable or low-cost counselling?

Yes.

We offer reduced-fee sessions with supervised trainee counsellors. These sessions:

  • Are professionally supported
  • Provide effective help for many issues
  • Offer a more affordable option for ongoing support

Availability is limited.

When are appointments available?

  • Daytime, evening, and some weekend sessions
  • Weekly or fortnightly options

This allows you to fit counselling around your work and personal life.

  • Greater flexibility if you’re busy or prefer to stay at home
  • Access from anywhere in the UK

How long is each session?
